Well, my system is not much good at cataloguing, but certainly fast, efficient and space saving. So when I watch a movie or TV show, I just delete it.

Well the fun part of Plex is, you can shre your movies with "friends".
Most smart TV's got a plex app which you can download making it also ideal to watch your movies from your NAS or PC directly on TV.
Also Plex can automatically add all cover arts and movie details. Sorry big fan here.

I have Plex as well. Not bad, but it does have its issues as well. Mostly with identifying movies - rarer on TV shows. Had to play with it to get both different series on there sych as MacGyver, Charlies Angels, etc.

I am working on a solution that will work locally (not yet streaming to devices) that will categorize and use VLC to play files. Will also support PDF/pictures/etc. Should be done in a few more months and it will be free.

I think what the OP is looking is for is a script that index and sort out movies. I don't have the name for the script but i'm using a search engine that include sites that are using them.

For me, if i wanted to create a catalog i probably will use a http server like liteserve and structure with a index.html or using folders

I like the collectrz.com app. Very easy to use and add new information.

Used to use Movienizer, Movie Collector, EMDB was one of the best . But since I move across to Radarr, Sonarr, never used them again.
